When Wyatt and Charlotte began to bicker one too many times over the finishing touches on the second tree, Cass suggested they put their boots and coats on and head outside.

I watched through the kitchen window as they walked to the barn like a family of ducks. It was so cute.

But I got a lot done in the afternoon after lunch. Every day would be busy from here on in, with guests and three meals a day and, of course, Christmas Day. But I’d done as much as I could do for now.

I’d heard them all come back inside. The sound of small feet and small voices and Cass’s deep voice gave them away, and it sounded as if they were bringing in some wood for the fire.

But soon two excited little faces appeared in the kitchen. “It’s two o’clock,” Wyatt said.

“Can we make the bread?” Charlotte asked. “Daddy said we had to ask.”

“Of course you can,” I said, putting two bowls on the counter. I’d brought in an old apple box from the dry storeroom for Charlotte to stand on. “But first we need to wash our hands.”

Cass stood to the side, smiling, while I had them both mix equal parts of the dry ingredients in their bowls—which wasn’t really necessary with a bread maker, but I figured kids liked to mix stuff with spatulas. But while the bread maker made it very easy, it also made it a little anticlimactic.

Making bread, or any kind of baking should be about kneading and getting your hands into it. But making bread by hand with two little kids was probably not a good idea, and I didn’t think they’d appreciate a good old Aussie damper. So I went with something better. “Okay, now it’s cookie making time.”

Making a quick cookie dough took no time, and both Charlotte and Wyatt loved measuring everything out and helping. But Cass was still just standing there . . . he was smiling, even laughed a few times, but he wasn’t involved.

I nodded to him. “Daddy needs to wash his hands too,” I said. “He can help.”

Once he stepped in, I stepped back and let him enjoy this time with his kids.

They helped each other, they laughed, they all took turns in mixing and rolling out the dough. Wyatt chose chocolate chips and Charlotte chose sprinkles.

Cass’s smile was something special.

We didn’t have cookie cutters, so I suggested using the rim of a drinking glass. It wasn’t perfect, but using it made Charlotte and Wyatt happy and they took turns. And Cass was the happiest I’d seen him.

Once the cookies were in the oven baking, Cass took both kids to wash their hands properly in the bathroom while I began to tidy up the kitchen. I had no idea kids could make so much mess.

I heard the TV go on and a second later, Cass appeared at the kitchen door. “Kids are hungry. I’ll make them a snack, if that’s okay?”

I laughed. “Of course it’s okay. This is your house, it’s their house.
